SMART JAILS
The strategy, within Italian jail’s program, has three lines of action: deflationary measures of incarceration, staff enforcement and prisons construction. Prisons, pavilions, completions and refurbishments to create 12.024 new detention spaces: the aim is to create structures in accordance with the most advanced international standards.
13 new pavilions for a total of 3000 new prison beds: the technology required by the public call for tender was reinforced concrete bearing walls or reinforced concrete structural frames.
Sterchele Spa® has signed contracts to supply prefabricated structures and bathroom pods for five pavilions (for a total of 1.000 bed spaces), composed of prefabricated load-bearing walls, PREM beams, hollow core slabs, concrete stairs and landings and bathroom pods.
Load-bearing panels are used for partition and facade walls. They constitute an original development and an integration of north Europe residential prefabrication system with technology and experience of StercheleGroup®.
Walls are the same height of the interfloor; all the connections are completed with cast in situ concrete; horizontal steel connections with the slabs are made with the registered Stabox casting systems, vertical connections with corrugated conduits and steel bars; side connections realized with “loop box” by Halfen® and integrative bars. Facade panels incorporate also steel grilles for the cells.
Beams belong to PREM technology.
The construction system is completed with prefabricated reinforced concrete ramps and landings, equipped with telescopic connections.
To model the frame, made with load-bearing panels, a specific structural software was used (PRO_SAP by 2S.I. Ltd of Ferrara) natively equipped with an appropriate procedure for the calculation of prefabricated structural panels.
The Prefabricated Concrete Bathroom Pods are equipped with vandal-resistant sanitary ware, fittings and specific remotely controlled installations. Pods are laid on floors during the assembly phases.
The great integration, flexibility and completeness of StercheleGroup® building systems and bathroom pods were crucial to win these five pavilions (from North to South), in addition to its organizational skills in knowing how to manage such complex construction sites and the strict and narrow qualification grid.
